He opened September by winning the Webster City Lynx Invite in 15:45.12, running alone for most of the race and leading Gilbert to a 1-2-3 individual finish. A three-time all-state runner with a career-best 5K of 14:57.50, Bleich leads a Gilbert team that is ranked No. 1 in 3A and has won the last three state championships. -

Southeast Polk 2027Stanley Cooper, a senior running back at Southeast Polk, had the defining performance of September in Class 5A. On Sept. 18 he carried 29 times for 196 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-28 win over defending 5A champion Dowling Catholic. His last score was a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter, and his brother Adrian ran in the two-point conversion that tied the game. Cooper came into the season after rushing for 1,311 yards and 17 touchdowns at 8.5 yards per carry, and he has the Rams back in contention for the 5A title. -

South Hardin 2027Braden Weig, South Hardin's first-year starting quarterback, has led the No. 3-ranked Tigers to a 5-0 start, and no quarterback in Iowa has thrown for more yards. In September he completed 64 of 96 passes (66.7%) for 1,192 yards and 17 touchdowns with only three interceptions, and he sits second in the state in passing touchdowns. He opened the season by throwing for 364 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers in a 34-0 shutout of West Marshall. Weig spent last season as the backup, and in his first year as the starter he has made the offense one of the most productive in the state.

Dowling Catholic 2031Ginger Fay became the first eighth grader in Iowa to earn an automatic state qualifying time, and she now holds automatic cuts in both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley. She ranks fourth in the state in the 100 breaststroke against swimmers up to four years older, swims on a 200 freestyle relay ranked No. 1 in the state, and has become one of the top point scorers for the back-to-back defending state champion Maroons. -

Dunkerton 2027Taylor Kipp, a senior at Dunkerton, is one of the most dominant blockers in Iowa. She leads every class in the state in solo blocks this season, ranks third in Class 1A in total blocks and kill efficiency, and has the Raiders ranked seventh in 1A. Last fall she led 1A with 135 total blocks and helped Dunkerton reach the state tournament for the first time in school history, adding 14 kills in a five-set quarterfinal win. Off the court, Kipp holds a 4.0 GPA, leads her school's FCA group, is involved in National Honor Society, Student Senate, and FCCLA, and has committed to play volleyball at UW-Platteville. -

MOC-Floyd Valley 2027Natalie Anderson, a senior at MOC-Floyd Valley, has been one of the fastest distance runners in the country this fall. On Sept. 4 she finished second at the Augustana Twilight in 17:10, a time in the top 30 nationally, and beat a nationally ranked runner in the process. She opened her season with a 22-second personal record at the Spencer Invite, defending her title by nearly two and a half minutes, and she won the Storm Lake Invitational in 17:33 to lead the Dutchmen to the team title. She was ninth at state last fall and now ranks as the top runner in Class 3A. -

Dallas Center-Grimes 2027Gwen Farley runs the offense for Dallas Center-Grimes as one of the top setters in Class 4A. She opened September with 40 assists and four kills in a three-set sweep of Pella, earning a nomination for statewide Athlete of the Week. Farley comes into this season after a regular season last fall in which she totaled 904 assists, 202 digs, 49 kills, and 31 aces, a line that made her a finalist for 4A Player of the Year, where she finished third in statewide fan voting.
